Cape Verde has been recognized as one of the African countries with the most press freedom, ranking 5th on the continent and 41st globally, according to the 2024 World Press Freedom Index, released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The archipelago scored 72.77 points, reflecting its commitment to transparency, the safety of media professionals and a favorable environment for journalism. Among the factors assessed are the political context, the legal framework, the economic and socio-cultural situation, as well as the safety of journalists.

At the top of the African list is Mauritania (33rd in the global ranking), followed by Namibia, Seychelles and South Africa. Despite the progress made by several countries on the continent, RSF warned that challenges such as censorship, arbitrary arrests and restrictions on access to information are still obstacles in many nations.

Cape Verde's recognition reinforces its position as a benchmark for press freedom in Africa, demonstrating the importance of a continued commitment to transparency and journalists' rights.
